2021 marks the eighth year we’ve purchased coffee from the Long Miles Coffee Project (LMCP), and it has been an honor to observe their evolving operations and the positive impact they’ve had on farmers. Gitwe Hill bustles at all hours of the day with the activity of village life. Though this region carries deep scars from its violent past, there is an unrivalled unity among the people there. As a community, they have worked hard to build schools for their children and homes for their neighbors. With the help of Anicet and Patrice, the two coffee scouts dedicated to working on the hill, farmers are learning the best farming practices and developing a renewed interest in growing coffee. Gitwe farmers are pioneering a new irrigation method by building water channels alongside their farms, which collect rain water that slowly irrigates their coffee trees and other crops. The Farmer Field School and Coffee Scouts program allow for education and innovation. These programs have helped to fight the threat of the potato taste defect, mitigate the effects of climate change on soil health, and empower farmers with the tools they need to produce the incredible quality you taste in every cup of Gitwe Hill coffee.
